The WCMS Lady Pioneer soccer team squeaked past the Coffee County Lady Raiders to move to 2-0 on the season with a hard-fought win Thursday night in McMinnville.
Behind goals from Jessica Chastain and Breezy Wanamaker, WCMS captured a 2-1 victory.
“We came out and did what we were supposed to do,” said WCMS coach Matt Walker. “With a very athletic goal by Breezy Wanamaker and great saves by Molly Dodd, we were able to come out with a win.”
In the first half, the Lady Pioneer struggled to find the net on numerous shot attempts. With 15 minutes left in the first half, striker Jaden Smartt was able to break through Coffee County’s defense, making a beautiful cross to Chastain for the Lady Pioneers first goal.
The WCMS defense held its ground to go into halftime up 1-0.
In the second half, the Lady Pioneers came out sluggish, but a Coffee County goal served to wake them up. For most of the second half the Lady Pioneers battled hard with the Lady Raiders for the lead.
The difference came when WCMS earned a free direct kick just outside the plenty box. Bekah Jackson took the kick that deflected off the goalkeeper’s gloves. Wanamaker pounced on the loose ball and kicked in the goal to give the Lady Pioneers the lead.
As Coffee County tried to make another run at scoring, the WCMS defense didn’t allow it to account for the final 2-1 margin.
WCMS will be back in action Tuesday against Franklin County South at WCHS soccer field. The varsity team will start at 5:30 p.m.
