The WCMS Pioneer soccer team defended their home field on Monday, beating Franklin County 4-0 in a shutout.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half with neither scoring thanks to good defense.
WC defender Bryan Garcia made plenty of great moves in the first half, sliding into the ball to knock it out of bounds when Franklin County had control. He was unafraid to fly around the field.
WCMS goalie Jonas Bailey also kept the Pioneers in the game with impressive blocks, including one at the beginning of the game where the ball ricocheted off the goal where a Franklin County striker had a chance to score.
Bailey blocked the close-up shot and prevented a goal, and he continued this success throughout the night also unafraid to get on the ground for the ball. The first half ended with no score, but the Pioneers exploded in the second half.
Two minutes into the half, Hector Marquez scored the first WC goal with his head which gave the Pioneers a lot of excitement for the rare shot. Riding off that momentum, Ronny Orellana scored their second goal not long after, 2-0.
Franklin County was able to get the ball close to the goal, but Warren County’s defensive team kept Franklin from any points. Gabriel Cordova is a consistent ballhandler for the Pioneers and that was especially true on Monday evening.
Cordova had impressive footwork and sunk a long shot with less than 10 minutes left, making it 3-0. Cordova made another long shot that looked to have been blocked by Franklin County’s goalie, but the ball went through his hands to give WC one last goal with 3 minutes left.
