WCMS girls win championship

The Warren County Middle School fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball team only lost once last year, but it was the final game of the season.Using the loss as motivation throughout the offseason, the Lady Pioneers burst back on the scene in the preseason elementary tournament with three straight wins.The last came in the championship game Saturday night at Dibrell Gym as Warren County won 38-26 over the Irving College Lady Tigers to take the title.Shonacye Rutledge played a huge role in the Lady Pioneer victory. The sixth-grade guard scored 14 of her 17 points in the final period as Warren County turned a one-point lead into a 12-point triumph.Rutledge used her speed to get open looks in the fourth quarter. Rutledge scored on layups, went coast-to-coast after steals and even spotted up for a few jumpers as Warren County fed the star guard the ball.The offensive explosion by Rutledge broke open a game which went into the fourth quarter with Warren County leading 22-21.Caylie Sherrell and Riley Desmarais had kept Irving College in the game with their ability to put the ball in the basket.Desmarais gave Irving College a slim halftime lead when she scored five points in the second quarter, including sinking a 3-pointer.
