The momentum built going into Christmas break didn’t seem to carry over to 2019 for the Warren County Middle School girls team.
The Lady Pioneers fell 43-16 to Coffee County Thursday, dropping the team to 7-8 overall.
Warren County had won three of its last four games before Christmas, including a big victory over Mt. Juliet in the Oakland Holiday Tournament. Everything seemed to come crashing down in Manchester, when the Lady Pioneers fell behind big before the game even reached halftime.
Warren County trailed 24-7 at halftime, getting a 3-pointer from Sable Winfree for its lone points in the first quarter and layups from Kinslee Grissom and Bella Bain in the second frame.
Down big, coach Tara Koran decided to see if her younger players could claw back in the second half. Koran played a rotation featuring mostly seventh-graders.
It didn’t do much to jolt the team’s offense.
The Lady Pioneers hit only one shot from the field in the second half – a late layup from Aleah Davis. The rest of the team’s scoring came from the free-throw line, where Winfree for was 4-for-6 and Alexxia Verge connected on 3-of-6 attempts.
The Lady Pioneers will try to bounce back Monday at home when Shelbyville Harris comes to town. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
