The Warren County Middle School dance team recently represented its school and competed against teams from all across the country for the 2020 NDA National Championship

The event, held in Orlando, showcased the local dance team on a stage before hundreds of spectators. After showing off all its routines, the WCMS dancers had a chance to experience Universal Studios and Walt Disney World.

The dance team competed in the pom, game day, and hip hop divisions. WCMS placed second in both pom and game day, trailing behind first place by less than a point in each category. The dance team placed fourth in the hip hop division.

Being the first time ever competing at this level, the team was ecstatic with the outcome.

“Mrs. Butler and I have been so honored to coach such an ambitious group of young ladies. They worked hard, held their own and left everything they had out on that stage,” said coach Kristy Weeter. “To say we are proud would be an understatement. Not only did they dance in unison, they also created a unified bond as a team that will last a lifetime. This truly was an experience none of us will ever forget.”

Coach Jacquelyn Butler added, “We couldn’t ask for a better, more supportive group of parents and friends. It took the whole tribe. Dance moms and friends helped with hair and makeup. Dance dads were shedding some tears, doing toe-touch challenges and turning their beards to glitter. Not to mention a group of girls that carried themselves so maturely to be on such a big stage. It truly was an amazing experience.”

Leela Beaty, Makayla Cagle, and Brooklyn Cope have been team members for three years and they all had a great time competing, even if the lead up to it required lots of hard work.

“Preparing for nationals was not an easy task. It takes hard work and dedication that the team was willing to take. We had a wonderful time and received amazing results,” said Beaty.

“Going backstage was nerve racking, but while performing on the stage, all I could think about was how great it felt. It was really fun preparing for it because this was my first time ever going to nationals,” added Cagle.

Cope summed up all the whole mood of the team after it was over.

“This team is amazing. I love my coaches and couldn’t have asked for better. I cried the whole way home. I am going to miss it.”
