WCMS boys win

Pioneer guard Carter Simpson was cutting between defenders frequently in the Pioneers 42-21 victory against Tullahoma West on Monday night. Simpson led the middle school Pioneers in scoring with 15 points.

The middle school Pioneers basketball team continues to rack up wins as the season progresses. Monday night the Pioneers beat Tullahoma 41-21 in a game that was a little sloppy in the second half, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Before the game, Tullahoma West’s head coach said his team has struggled, winning only two games so far this season. The Pioneers started out strong jumping out to a 9-0 lead with Carter Simpson scoring six of those points. Hector Marquez and Keyton Reno scored the other 3 points. Marquez made a basket and Reno sank a free throw.

The Pioneers clamped down on defense and had a comfortable 21-9 lead at halftime. Perhaps the lead made the Pioneers a little complacent as they became sloppy during parts of the second half.

WCMS head coach Kevin Burnett said, “I think we took too many shots the first thing down court. I told the team at halftime to slow it down and not take the first shot, to look for our best shot.”

So goes the challenge of coaching middle school students. Everything may not go as planned, but the Pioneers played well. The entire team got to play in the game for the Pioneers, and Tullahoma West also emptied its bench late in the fourth quarter.

Carter Simpson led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points. Simpson was effective in full-court fast breaks, making several layups. Simpson also distributed the ball to teammates for several assists.

DeShawn Adams was once again strong on the boards and scored 8 points, mainly off rebounds. Ayden Odineal scored 7 points that included two 3-pointers. Odineal has become a reliable 3-point shooter for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers play their final home game Thursday night against Harris Middle. It will be Eighth-Grade Night at the middle school gym.
