The WCMS basketball teams started district tournament play Wednesday night in Shelbyville. The Lady Pioneers were led in scoring by Bri Taylor with 11 points and she also had 7 blocked shots.
The girls lost to North Middle, but their season is not over. The Lady Pioneers will be playing in the state tournament at Stewarts Creek in Rutherford County Feb. 1-5 because some of the teams in the district dropped out due to COVID-19.
The boys won over Coffee County on Wednesday night and played Tullahoma West last night. Dyson Elam was the high scorer against Coffee County with 17 points.
Pioneer head coach Kevin Burnett commented on the tournament, “This has been a challenging year for everyone, and it’s been no exception for us. This game is a lot about momentum. I thought we were starting to do some really good things, and then we hit a 3-1/2 week shutdown and got set back. In Wednesday night’s game against Coffee, we had a slow start but we were competing. In the second half, we hit a couple of shots early and it seemed to give us some much-needed momentum. I was very proud of their effort.”
