The WCHS track and field team competed in subsectionals Tuesday at Rhea County where many Pioneers and Lady Pioneers have qualified for sectionals.

DeKalb County co-ops with WCHS as head coach Kristen VanVranken works in DeKalb, meaning the DCHS students attend school in DeKalb but run for Warren County.

Twelve athletes in total will advance to the Sectional Qualifying Meet on May 10 at Cookeville High School track in 11 different events. Donathan Lewis placed third in the 100 meters, finishing with a time of 11.44 seconds, and DeKalb County student Aaron Gottlied placed third in the 1600 meters at 4:49.36.

DeKalb’s Ella VanVranken also qualified finishing first in both the 800 meters and 1600 meters for the girls. She finished the 800-meter race in just under 2:30, and she finished the 1600 meters with a time of 5:22.

Warren County’s Savannah Winfree qualified for the 300-meter hurdles, placing fourth at 57.17 seconds. Ally Beneke (DCHS) and Kyra Perkins (WCHS) both won first in high jump and long jump, respectively.

Beneke jumped an impressive 5 foot, 4 inches in high jump to secure her spot at sectionals, and Perkins set a school record for long jump going 16 feet and 11 inches, just short of 17 feet.

Four relay teams qualified with two boys teams and two girls.

Lewis joined Julian Martinez, D’andre Jackson and Uriah King for the 4x200-meter race and broke the school record with 1:33.85 placing second.

Martinez, King and Lewis teamed up again for the 4x100 meter along with Marquis Martin, placing fourth at 46.18 seconds.

Winfree, Beneke, Kieriae Humphries and Perkins also placed fourth for the girls 4x100 meter with a time of 54.77 seconds.

Winfree, Beneke, Evelyn Sanchez and Perkins placed second in the 4x200-meter relay finishing at 1 minute and 55.44 seconds.

The sectionals meet will be May 10 at Cookeville where the top 4 will qualify for the state tournament May 26 at MTSU. Coach VanVranken says the team has the potential for a few state qualifiers.
