WCHS softball heading back to regionals

With the WCHS Lady Pioneers hosting the district championship, they automatically get a seat in the region tournament which starts on Monday.

WC has played a pretty good season but has really stepped it up in the tail end to make it to the district finals and secure a spot in the region tournament.

However, the region will be a tougher bracket as they face other district finalists, and there is no losers’ bracket. So a loss in the first round would end their tournament run. But if the Lady Pioneers make it to the region championship, they’ll play a substate game with the winner qualifying for the state tournament.

WC is no stranger to the region tournament as they reached the substate game in 2019 where they were one win short of going to state. This year, they’re only two wins away from the state tournament, a win in the first round of the region and a win at substate.

“I’m not really worried about the region berth at this point and time,” said WCHS head coach Gooby Martin. “We still have a game to win on Wednesday to reach one of our goals, which is to win the district.”

Keeping focus on one game at a time seems to be working as the Lady Pioneers have run through the first part of the district tournament with two wins. They will play in the district championship tonight and will advance to the first round of the region tournament Monday where a win will be needed to advance further.
