WCHS Pioneers fall to Shelbyville
Isaiah Cummings
Isaiah Cummings led the Pioneers with 18 points Tuesday night.

The WCHS Pioneers started with a bang and ended in a flurry. But in between the team suffered a mid-game lull that allowed Shelbyville to earn a 58-54 win Tuesday night.

Isaiah Cummings led the Pioneers with 18 points, followed by Nate Elrod with 10.

Playing on the road, the Pioneers burst out of the gates with a 20-point, first-quarter explosion to go up 20-11. Then the offense hit snooze.

“We just didn’t score the ball in the second and third quarters,” said WCHS coach Chris Sullens.

Sullens has talked about not allowing one or two bad possessions to turn into a bad quarter, but that’s what happened in Shelbyville. The Pioneers only mustered 6 points in the second quarter and 5 points in the third.

Meanwhile, Jayshon Jones was heating up for Shelbyville. He finished with a game-high 27 points, which included 23 in the second half.

Isaiah Cummings picked up the intensity and tried to carry the Pioneers to victory down the stretch. He scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough for Warren County to win its district opener.

The Pioneers fall to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in the district.

Injuries are beginning to mount for Warren County. Post player Alex van Vuuren has missed several games due to a wrist injury and now Kaden Rutledge has joined him on the injury report. Rutledge missed Tuesday’s game in Shelbyville due to injury and it’s hopeful he can return Friday night against Coffee County.
