After a stellar showing by both Warren County High School golf teams in the Keith Maxwell memorial tournament Tuesday, the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers are subscribing to the notion “There’s no place like home.”
The Lady Pioneers won the event held at McMinnville Country Club while the Pioneers placed second in a 13-team field. It was the first time this season the WCHS teams played their home course in competition.
The Lady Pioneers have grown accustom to winning on other courses, having won Tullahoma and Murfreesboro invitationals earlier this year. The team’s third tournament victory came on its home turf though, where freshman Hannah Powell shined.
No other girl at the event turned in a better round than the youngest member of the Lady Pioneers. Powell’s 75 was the best of 44 girls who competed and helped her team to a five-stroke victory over Coffee County.
The Warren County girls team shot 152 as a team, getting Powell’s lowest round of the day and a 77 from sophomore Saylem Powell. The Lady Raiders shot 157 for second while Blackman claimed third with a team score of 167.
DeKalb County’s Mallory Sullivan shot the second best round by a female, turning in a 76 at McMinnville Country Club. Anna Cunningham from Cookeville, Coffee County’s Hollee Sadler and Saylem Powell each tied for third with rounds of 77.
Other Lady Pioneer golfers who played Tuesday in the tournament were: Brittany Myers 80, Bryann Craven 88, Ali Mingle 95, Belle Ramsey 107, Mia Cantrell 111 and Lauren Childers 140.
The Pioneers’ second-place finish in the Keith Maxwell tournament was aided by the play of freshman Bracton Womack.
Womack tied for the third-lowest round in the boys competition, which featured 13 teams and 77 golfers. Womack shot 74, tying with Coffee County’s Matt Johnson. Blackman golfer Tanner Owens shot 70 to claim the honor as top medalist.
Johnson’s round helped the Red Raiders win the event with a team score of 305 while the Pioneers placed second with 312. The Pioneers got a score of 78 from Nicholas Powell, 79 from Clayton Myers and 81 by Nick Stern for their four-player team total.
Other Pioneer golfer scores were: Liam Brock 81, Houston Wood 84, Chandler Cassel 85, Logan Bodnar 87 and Tucker Lynn 88.
The Lady Pioneers followed up their tournament victory at home Tuesday with at second-place showing at the Lady Raider Invitational Wednesday. Hannah Powell was the second medalist at the event as she shot 74. Myers and Saylem Powell each shot 80 as one of their scores contributed to the team score of 154. Milan won the event with a team score of 152.
