Ninth annual Stewarts Creek Tournament
Warren County Freshmen Boys (5-2) took home the silver at LaVergne High School

GAME 1 Dec. 16

WCHS  51
LaVergne 47

Coach Stephen Glenn’s comments: Very up tempo and both teams played at a fast, up-and-down pace, but I thought our guys played hard and started to settle down in the second half to where we could control more of the tempo and pace of the game.

Game 2 Dec. 17

WCHS 62
Brentwood  33

Coach Glenn’s comments: We knew as coaches would have to find some guys to step up. The focus point was to play solid defense in order to keep the game close and hope we could catch some fire by shooting the three ball. Our guys came out and bought in to the defensive game plan by getting stops and steals. All this was huge jump start to our offense. Our team came out shooting the ball extremely well from the 3-point line, which continued into the second period. In the second half, we continued to focus on the defensive end we suffered an injury to Irving Espinoza late in the game with a leg injury. It was a good team win we got everyone on the bench in the game. This win put us the championship game.”

Game 3 Dec. 17

Blackman 38
WCHS 35

Coach Glenn’s comments: We all hear about Blackman and the schools from Murfreesboro which was one of reasons we wanted to play in this tournament to have a chance to play against well-known competition and having a chance to make our guys better. The injury bug hit us this time. It would be Espinoza who just couldn’t go. He could only play one minute before having to come off the floor. We just continue to tell the guys we need someone to step up. We reminded the guys to play defense like we did in the previous games. Knowing we would have to play small in baseball terms by using the clock in our favor taking good quality shoots. Down 1 point at the end of the first the team started to believe. Up 1 point at the end of the half, we liked our odds. I thought if we could just keep it close by one or two possessions we would be in great position to win. In the third we came hitting the 3 ball and took a 9-point lead at one point. The fourth quarter would catch up with us with our point guard out and guys had to play some different positions at times. The steam just started run out of us but I was really proud of the effort they displayed throughout the tournament. If anything free throws and us not being able to score the ball in the fourth was just something hard to overcome. The team really battled hard and had a chance as one of our guys went hard to the rim with about 2.8 to draw an and-one to tie it up but unfortunately it didn’t fall our way.
