Centertown rebounded from a sluggish performance in the Morrison Ruritan Preseason Tournament by rebounding seemingly every missed shot in its season-opener Monday night.
The Warriors used their rebounding advantage to often get 3-4 shots on the same possession during a 39-17 home win over Boyd Christian.
Centertown post Ryan Romzek was a dominant force inside, scoring many of his points on putbacks. He provided an exclamation point with a 3-pointer to end the game in finishing as the top scorer with 14.
Jack Rhoton was Boyd’s most consistent scorer. He made two 3-pointers on his way to 10 points.
Centertown began to establish control early with its full-court pressure. Boyd was hurt by having only one primary ballhandler in Bryant Ralph.
The Broncos were usually able to gallop past the press once Ralph got the ball in his hands, but Boyd committed a number of turnovers on poor passes trying to get him the ball.
Centertown (1-0) began to get some separation at the end of the first quarter when Kiptyn Medley stepped in front of a backcourt pass and cruised in for a layup, 11-5. Centertown’s Ryder Gillispie then made a layup off an inbounds play as the first-quarter buzzer sounded to put the Warriors ahead 13-5.
Centertown would continue to pull away, up 22-8 at the half.
Boyd (0-1) played with determination and gave great effort, but the Broncos couldn’t keep pace with only seven total players. Centertown was overpowering on the boards, leading to several second-chance points, and the Warriors were disruptive enough with their backcourt pressure to keep Boyd off balance.
