Dylan Ward was recognized as one of the state’s best baseball players over the weekend. Attending the American Legion banquet, Ward was named the 17U MVP after leading Post 173 to a state championship last summer.
Ward, an upcoming senior at Warren County High School, played an integral role during his team’s 4-0 sprint through the state tournament. Ward set the tone in the team’s first game, dominating Columbia, its eventual opponent in the championship game.
“He just competed hard,” said WCHS baseball coach Trice Powers, who also coached Post 173. “He led our staff this summer as a consistent pitcher we could rely on and give the ball to in big games.”
Ward’s family and coach were on hand to see him accept the award at Saturday’s banquet. Melody Ward was thankful Powers helped bring back American Legion, giving her son the opportunity to make great memories.
“The banquet was amazing and it was such an honor to be part of it,” said Ward. “Coach Powers has really done so much for our summer program. We were used to playing a few games in the summer and being done. This summer was the best.”
Ward received a $500 scholarship along with accepting a trophy at the banquet.
He’ll be back on the local diamond soon. The WCHS baseball team begins practice next week.
