A quest for a state title came up short for Valeria Vargas. The Lady Pioneer senior ended her career with a 9-over, 81 in Wednesday’s final round of the TSSAA state tournament held at Willowbrook Golf Course. Vargas finished in a tie for 15th among 48 of the state’s top female golfers.“The goal this year was to qualify for the state championship, so finishing in the top 20 was an accomplishment for me,” said Vargas.Vargas went into the final day of play in contention for a top-10 finish, though it seemed a longshot she would be able to catch leader Malia Stovall. Stovall, who shot 6-under Tuesday, only widened her lead Wednesday, shooting 1-under to win comfortably by seven strokes.Wednesday’s action was a flip of the script for Vargas.
