The finals of the 3-pt Club girls preseason tournament came down to whose No. 21 was going to have the better game.
Coming into the finals, Dibrell’s Bailey Barrett and Eastside’s MaKenna Mason were the tournament’s top scorers. They were lined up against one another in the finals Thursday night at Charlie Dalton Gym and Barrett’s Lady Wildcats got the better of the meeting when they claimed the championship with a 24-12 victory.
Barrett and Mason each led their team in scoring in the championship, but it was a determined Dibrell defense which stole the show for three quarters.
By the time Mason racked up all seven of her points in the fourth quarter, Dibrell had built a 17-1 cushion.
Most of the lead was built by Barrett and Rachel Johnson. Barrett scored six of her eight points in the first three quarters while Johnson, the tournament’s MVP, added four points in the first half.
With Dibrell’s two top scorers playing well early, it was up to the defense to make the points hold up. The Lady Wildcats employed a press which kept Eastside guessing all game.
The Lady Wildcats held Eastside to one point through three quarters. The only Lady Bulldog to score was Kaitlyn Brock, who hit a free throw in the second quarter.
Baskets by Ali Wrisner in the second quarter and Elliana Morales in the third quarter helped build the Dibrell lead to 16 points going into the fourth.
When the final six minutes were put on the clock, Mason started to find openings in the Dibrell defense.
Mason sliced her way to the basket for three layups in the final period and added a free throw to total seven points. Jaylen Boyd added a layup and two free throws, but the Dibrell lead was too much to overcome.
Morales and Barrett got their final baskets in the fourth quarter for the Lady Wildcats, while Brianna Young came off the bench to score four points. Jalynn Davis also hit a shot in the fourth for Dibrell as the Lady Wildcats won by 12.
Barrett led Dibrell with eight points and was named to the all-tournament team following the game. Johnson, Morales and Young had four points apiece for the Lady Wildcats. Wrisner and Davis rounded out the scoring with two points each.
Davis and Young were each named to the all-tournament team for their efforts in Dibrell’s championship run.
Mason’s seven-point outburst in the fourth quarter helped her lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring and garner an all-tournament selection. Boyd chipped in four points and Brock rounded out the scoring with one.
Eastside’s Madison Parsley and Lydia Townsend were also named to the all-tournament team following the championship game.
The fifth- and sixth-grade Warren County Elementary League begins tomorrow with a three-game slate. Eastside will play at WCMS, Boyd plays host to Irving College and Dibrell will travel to Morrison. All girls games will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by boys games.
