Boyd didn’t just beat opponents in 2022. The Lady Broncos rampaged to blowout victories on a near nightly basis, leading to a new school record for victories. The Boyd girls team won 36 games during the 2021-22 season, including running off two separate winning streaks of over 15 games.
Boyd won 17 straight games to start last season, then won 17 more in a row during January and February to crush the school record for victories. The only thing the Lady Broncos weren’t able to claim on the court last year was a championship though – they came in second in both the TSIAA state tournament and NACA national tournament at the end of the year.
On their way to 36 victories, Boyd outscored its opponents by an astonishing 1,249 points. The Lady Broncos had 10 wins by 50 or more last year, including an 85-point blowout in a rivalry game.
Leading the way during the historic season were seniors Lia Wright and Anna Jones. Wright was named to the TSIAA all-state team (as was junior Laney Copeland) and eventually signed at Roane State, where she has become an immediate role player. Jones declined college offers after her Boyd career, but she was able to notch 1,000 points before hanging up her sneakers.
