The winning streak has been snapped. Boyd had went the entire month of September without losing, but the Lady Broncos couldn’t hold on down the stretch against Franklin Classical Monday.
Boyd fell 18-16 in the fifth set, failing to capitalize on three potential match points before the Knights rallied back to win late. It drops Boyd to 17-6 overall and 9-2 in TNCAA matches.
Monday was a role reversal for the Lady Broncos, who had rallied back to beat Franklin Classical in five sets in a previous matchup this year. Boyd looked like it was going to pull off another five-set thriller against the Knights when it got up 14-13 in the final set, but a pair of errant serves from the Lady Broncos kept Franklin Classical in the game.
In the late stages, the Knights won just enough battles at the net to grab control and got the final point on a scorched serve that locked up the Boyd back-row defense.
The Lady Broncos had to rally back and win the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set. Franklin Classical had won the second and third sets, taking command on Boyd’s homecourt with blistering serves and riding their big hitter in the middle.
Senior Audrey Durham sparked the Lady Broncos in the fourth set, going on a scoring rampage early that put Boyd up for good. Krista Chisam was also active setting and on defense, while Mia Onderka was the team’s go-to hitter at the net.
Kealey Simpson added a key point in the late stages of the fourth, keeping Boyd alive with hopes of extending the winning streak. It wasn’t meant to be though as Boyd squandered a late opportunity to pick up a key victory against a tough TNCAA opponent.
Boyd was back in action Thursday night at home for senior night to celebrate Durham and Lanya Byars. Make sure to check Sunday’s Standard for more information about the Lady Broncos’ home matchup.
