WCMS coach Mendy Stotts helped track star Dyson Elam soar to a state championship last weekend in high jump.

Coach Stotts hopes her basketball team can reach similar heights this coming season.

Stotts has held tryouts and announced her 7-8 grade girls basketball team at Warren County Middle School. The team has 18 players evenly split with nine eighth-graders and nine seventh-graders.

“I expect us to be a very competitive team,” said Stotts. “We have a lot of very good athletes and we have a well-balanced team. We have girls who can shoot, girls who are good in the post. We really have a lot of good players at every position.”

Stotts says the girls are not only talented, they are scrappy. WCMS has been having open gym sessions in recent weeks and Stotts has noticed the intensity has reached high levels.

“These are very motivated girls and they are competitive,” said Stotts. “When I ask them what they want they all say the same thing. They want to win. I have a very positive outlook for this season.”

The list of returning players includes Elly Bain, who earned all-conference honors last year as a seventh-grader. Katie Bechtel played basketball last year in Dibrell, but she’s made the move to WCMS and will be donning a Lady Pioneer uniform as a seventh-grader.

Stotts mentioned Maci McBride and Addison Steakley as two other players who make the seventh-grade class shine.

“We have several girls who are playing AAU basketball which is helping them grow,” said Stotts. “I’ve seen a lot of improvement in these girls since the end of last season. The thing I’m looking for is to see the girls continue to work hard over the summer. We have three summer camps scheduled and a lot can change, especially if you’re out there working hard.”

The 7-8 grade basketball season will start in October.
