The Southern Standard wants to take the opportunity to highlight the standout Boyd athletes. Partnering with Kevin Rhoton, we will be honoring a Bronco of the Month throughout the 2022-23 school year. Our September Bronco of the Month is Lady Bronco junior Krista Chisam.
When it comes to what has brought about a huge change in the Lady Bronco volleyball program over the last two years, it’s easy to point at one arrival. As soon as Krista Chisam took the court at JK Stanley Gymnasium, the Lady Broncos started winning big.
Already an all-state honoree in TSIAA and TNCAA last year, Chisam has picked up her play while leading the Lady Broncos to an impressive 17-6 record, including a recent 13-match winning streak. She’s learned to bleed orange and blue as the top option for the Lady Broncos each night.
“I’m glad I’ve gotten to play here and I’m glad we’re having a good season,” said Chisam. “I really enjoy it here.”
Throughout September, when Boyd didn’t suffer a loss, Chisam did a little bit of everything for the Lady Broncos. She averaged over 17 assists per match, serving as the team’s primary setter every night. Her powerful serve also helped rack up over 35 aces in 10 matches, leaving her as the person to turn to anytime Boyd wanted to set the tone at the start of matches.
Chisam’s leadership and skill on the court has established Boyd as one of the top teams in the TNCAA conference. The Lady Broncos have a 9-2 record in conference play and could push for a state title in October.
Being showered with praise isn’t something Chisam is looking for while leading the Lady Broncos. Her favorite part of the game, one she’s been playing since a young age, is sharing the glory with her teammates.
“It’s just getting to play with everybody. I enjoy my teammates and winning with them,” said Chisam when asked about the best part about Boyd volleyball.
Chisam and the Lady Broncos will go back to work Thursday night in a home matchup against SC3. Action starts at 5:30 p.m.
