The Southern Standard Mets pulled off something Monday night no other team in the boys 9-10-year-old junior league had done all year, which was beat the Foodland Plus Phillies.Brooks Helton struck out 15 batters and the Mets racked up 12 hits in a 9-1 championship game victory to end the Phillies undefeated season one game short of the tournament title.The Mets got the bats going early, with James Jackson knocking a double off the right-field fence on the first pitch of the game.Jackson would move to third on a ground out by Benjamin Clark, then was joined on the base paths by Helton following a walk.With runners on the corners, Gaines Mayfield hit a dribbler down the third-base line. Phillies pitcher Brant Young tried to get Mayfield out at first, but his throw went wide of the mark.Jackson and Helton would each score on the errant throw, giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead.Helton, who totaled 30 strikeouts in the tournament, ran into some trouble in the bottom of the first. Walks to Young and Lucas Scruggs gave the Phillies two men aboard with one out.Helton was able to battle out of the jam with a strikeout and ground out to second base.
