While gold was the hope for the Broncos and Lady Broncos Saturday in the TSIAA state championships, both programs were able to find a silver lining after the games. The Lady Broncos and Broncos both ended the year as top teams in the state.
The Lady Broncos fell short of a state title in the Division 1 championship, losing 68-23 to Clarksville Christian, which has now won three straight TSIAA state titles. In the boys Division 2 state championship matchup, the Broncos were topped by Dickson Christian 68-50. It was the third loss this season for the Broncos to the Thunderbirds.
The Lady Broncos had been on a roll going into the state title tilt, winning seven in a row and 13 of their last 14 games, but the Centurions were at a different level in the finals. Boyd couldn't stop 6-foot-4 guard Lauren Hassell, who is already listed on ESPN's top 25 players for the Class of 2027. Hassell, daughter of former NBA player Trenton Hassell (coach of the Centurions), had a game-high 31 points as she outscored the Lady Broncos on her own in the finals.
"They've been the best team in the state for a while now and we've met them in the tournament every year," said Tim Page. "We did some things this time that we've haven't been able to accomplish in past meetings and I'm proud of the way our team battled. We'll just have to continue to look for ways to combat their size and length on both sides of the ball."
Boyd freshman Brooke Kesey did her best to battle with Clarksville Christian's twin towers in the post, Hassell and 6-foot-6 center Marley Spears. Kesey led the Lady Broncos with 15 points and seven rebounds while earning 'Star of the Game' honors from the TSIAA.
Katie Bechtel added four points for Boyd, while Paige Sweeten and Kelly Bush scored two points each.
Jordan Perry was the 'Star of the Game' for the Broncos in the boys finals, finishing with 21 points and 13 rebounds as his team fell short of what would've been the program's second Division 2 state title in the last four years. Boyd couldn't keep up from the three-point barrage of the Thunderbirds as Dickson Christian hit 10 triples on its way to victory.
Jack Rhoton added two triples of his own - and a pair of free throws - for the Broncos. Jordin Mitchell added six points, followed by five from Connor Andrews, four from Jaxon Grissom and two points each from Kaden Jones, Jace Matheney and Bryant Ralph.
Both Boyd teams are scheduled to finish their seasons by playing in the NACA tournament March 6-8 in Dayton.
