Last season, Warren County High School girls basketball coach Erick Baird debuted the Sun Drop Romp Christmas tournament. Since last year’s event, which was won by the Trousdale County Lady Jackets, interest has grown and the tournament has expanded.
The second annual Sun Drop Romp Christmas tournament features 22 teams, 12 in the boy’s division and 10 more in the ladies bracket.
The tournament games will be split between two gyms. Warren County High School will host games on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at Charlie Dalton Gym while Boyd Christian School will welcome teams all week at J.K. Stanley Gymnasium.
The Lady Pioneers and Pioneers will both take part in the tournament, as will the Boyd Broncos. Each of the three local teams will be in action on the first day of the Romp.
The Lady Pioneers will be the first to take the court when the team takes on Rhea County at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Charlie Dalton Gym. Warren County defeated Rhea County by one point in overtime in the first game of the season.
If the Lady Pioneers win against Rhea County, the team will be back in action that night against the Middle Tennessee Heat at 5:30 p.m. Warren County beat the Heat last Tuesday 47-35.
If the Lady Pioneers were to lose to Rhea County, the team will have to wait until Tuesday to play again. Warren County’s Tuesday opponent would be the loser between Monday’s matchup between Coffee County and Stone Memorial. The game would take place at Charlie Dalton Gym beginning at 2 p.m.
The boys schedule is less complicated the first two days. While the 10 girls teams are playing in a four-game guarantee tournament bracket, the 12 boys teams are split into four pools and the winners will play a tournament on Thursday and Friday.
Warren County drew Moore County and Jackson County in its pool. The Pioneers begin action against Jackson County tomorrow night at 7 p.m. on their home court. Jackson County beat Warren County 59-50 in the Woodbury Thanksgiving Classic.
The Pioneers are also set to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday night against Moore County. It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.
The Boyd Broncos are in a pool with Hixson and Monterey. The Broncos will play host to Hixson at 7 p.m. on Monday night and will take on Monterey at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The schedule for Thursday and Friday will be set on Tuesday night after pool play finishes. Check in Wednesday’s Southern Standard for the rest of the tournament schedule.
