Scott Smith to resign as football coach
WCHS COACH SMITH
Scott Smith, seen here addressing his players, is reportedly leaving Warren County High School to take over the head coaching job at Franklin County High School. His departure leaves the Pioneers to conduct their second head coaching search in two years.

The Scott Smith era is apparently over after just one year in Warren County. Smith is reportedly leaving to take the head coaching job at Franklin County.

“It’s not official yet because he hasn’t handed in his resignation,” said Director of Schools Bobby Cox. “But unofficially, that’s where he’s heading.”

Smith guided the Pioneers to a 4-6 record in his one season at Warren County. The team was 1-9 the year before.

Cox said he was pleased with Smith’s coaching performance.

“He did exactly what we asked him to do and that was build a foundation for Warren County football,” said Cox. “He was working to build the program. I thought he was the man for the job and he showed he was the man. I told him he was our coach, as far as I was concerned, for as long as he wanted the job. I’m disappointed to have to start the process all over again and find a new football coach. I thought we had the right guy.”

Cox said he will meet with WCHS athletic director Todd Willmore on Monday and they will determine how to proceed. He said ideally a new coach would be in place by the start of the next semester.

The coaching change comes as Warren County is entering the TSSAA’s power 32 conference next year in football. The division will have the Pioneers in a brutal district that includes Blackman, Oakland, LaVergne, Smyrna, Siegel, Coffee County and Cookeville.
