If you like outdoor adventure, fun time with the family, and enjoy a good challenge you don’t want to miss the eighth annual Rock Island 5 Miler to be held at Rock Island State Park on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m.
The run begins at The Sandbar, winds around the park hills and hollows through the campground roads, moves on to a woodsy trail, makes a quick visit to the Blue Hole, and returns to The Sandbar.
Five miles might not seem far, but anyone familiar with elevation scenario will know there are a few hills to climb. On another note, if you’re not in training for the Olympics don’t worry. Race director Blaine Wilcher says they have folks ages 8-80 participate each year.
“If you’re looking for a challenge, plus some wonderful scenery, this is one not to miss,” Wilcher says.
The scenery is spectacular taking in parts of the Upper Cumberland that are often world-renown and award-winning. The Blue Hole has been used for Olympic kayaking. There’s swimming, camping, fishing and there was even a scene in the Sylvester Stallone movie “The Specialist” shot there.
On top of all that, official sponsor SunDrop will be providing refreshments after the run. Make sure to register by Sept. 30 to receive your T-shirt by race day. Cost is $20, which includes the T-shirt and interested participants can register online www.reg2run.com, by calling 931-743-2461 or stop by the local Chamber of Commerce in downtown McMinnville.
All proceeds of the Rock Island 5 Miler go to support Main Street McMinnville, a community organization dedicated to the revitalization of downtown.
