Prater’s BBQ stayed in first in the 7-8 boys machine-pitch league, but keeping the top spot wasn’t easy Tuesday.Prater’s BBQ scored five runs in the top of the fifth and survived a late rally by Hoover and Son Insurance to win 8-7 at Hoover and Millraney Field.Tuesday’s first league game went into the final inning with the teams tied at four, setting up a fabulous finish.Prater’s BBQ looked like it had done enough to put Hoover and Son Insurance away when it doubled its run total in the fifth inning.Layne Roberts began the fifth with a triple, then scored on an RBI single by Trent Mills. Curtlan George followed with a double, bringing around Mills.George and Carter Templeton, who singled to reach base, would each come in to score on a single by Sean Cope to make it 8-4.The four-run deficit looked daunting when Hoover and Son Insurance went to the dugout for its final at-bat, but the team went down swinging.Brady Pegg started things off with a triple, then scored on a groundout by Elijah Fults.Nate Simmons followed with a double and would score on a single by Cameron Chilcutt.A fielder’s choice scored Chilcutt, making it a one-run game with two outs. Hoover and Son Insurance fell one run short when a strikeout ended the game.Mills, George, Cope, Charlie Moore and Jonathan Greene led Prater’s with two hits apiece.
