The Pioneers picked up a big win on the road Tuesday night in Rhea County. CJ Taylor and Ethan Smith each scored 16 points as Warren County beat the Golden Eagles 52-47.
Warren County (14-7) evened its District 6AAA record to 1-1 with Tuesday's victory, its fourth straight win at Rhea County and ninth straight in the series.
"It was a big win for us. The kids really stepped up," said coach Chris Sullens shortly after the narrow win.
Smith played the role of closer for the Pioneers, hitting four straight free throws in a 16-second span to push Warren County ahead 50-44 with 40 seconds to play.
Rhea County sliced the lead in half with a deep 3-pointer from Greg Taylor, but Warren County struck back by slicing through the Golden Eagle press. The Pioneers got a quick-hitting layup from Raven Lewandowski to put the game away.
Eli Jones added nine points and a key steal in the final minute. Lewandowski finished with six points, while Lacedrick Cox scored three and Brad Caten chipped in two.
Warren County will be back in action Friday with a crucial district game at home. The Pioneers are set to face Cookeville at 7:30 p.m.
