Senior point guard Dee Spates is a sparkplug who has been leading the Pioneers to a 9-3 record. Spates scored a gamehigh and season-high 27 points Saturday to lead the Pioneers over the Franklin County Rebels 56-46.

Spates averaged 16.3 points per game last week. It is challenging to be the floor general at point guard and score a lot of points. Spates has been strong at the freethrow line. Saturday night Spates was 9-of-11 from the line.

Two other Pioneers scored against Franklin County. C.J. Taylor contributed 16 points, and Aiden Cummings added 13. Cummings was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and made one 3-pointer. C.J. was slightly ahead of Spates last week averaging 17.3 points per game.

Top scorers for Franklin County were KeAndre Johnson with 13 points and Taylor Stovall with 12.

Last week was a tough week of four games, including three in a row Thursday through Saturday. The Pioneers won all three in a row.

WCHS coach Chris Sullens was pleased, stating, “With those three games back-to-back-toback, we told our guys that good teams could come through and win. We wanted to win three games in three nights. I thought we accomplished our goal.”

The Pioneers went 3-1 last week, splitting their district games against Stone Memorial and White County. The Pioneers face White County again in Sparta on Jan. 29 for what could be for the top seed in the district tournament.

This year because of COVID-19, the TSSAA has said district tournaments will take place at the gym of the higher seeded team. Sullens wants the district tournament to be at the Dalt.

The Pioneers have six district games left. Sullens wants to come out of the two district games this week with 3-1 district record, with the lone loss being to White County last week.

Last night the Pioneers were at Rhea County and Friday night they will be in Cookeville.
