The high school baseball team traveled to Riverdale on Monday and battled admirably in a 7-6 loss.

The game was decided in the bottom of the seventh with the game tied 6-6. Warren County allowed 2 hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. A wild pitch advanced runners to second and third that helped score the decisive run with a single.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second inning with some timely hitting, alert play in the batter’s box, and excellent base running. Ryland Holder and Jace Brantley both hit doubles in the 5-run inning, with Westen Wilson, Alec Hobbs and Ty Martin hitting singles.

Hobbs and Martin bunted and collectively produced a run and advanced base runners. The Pioneers found a way to get on base. Kason Holder got on base with a walk, and Wyatt Wilson was hit by a pitch.

The Pioneers scored their other run on hits and Riverdale errors to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the fifth. Riverdale won their district in Murfreesboro, and proved to be a tough team to contain on their home field. Overall, it was a good game for the Pioneers who had their Tuesday night game against Upperman cancelled due to inclement weather.

Warren County has one game left which will be senior night before the district tournament begins this week.

WCHS coach Phillip King spoke about the game, “It was good to get back in a rhythm after the back end of last week and prom over the weekend. We played a pretty good game against a top five team. Those guys just won the always-tough Murfreesboro district, and they had to walk it off with a hit in the seventh to win it. We had a couple of opportunities in the sixth and seventh to get another run or two in, but didn’t execute. I feel pretty good about it despite the loss because if we are going to get to where we want to be, we have to play games against teams like that and have a chance to win.”

Ryland Holder 2, Kason Holder 1, Jace Brantley 1, Ty Martin 1 and Westen Wilson 1. Producing RBIs were Ryland Holder 2, Kason Holder 1, Jace Brantley 1, Ty Martin 1 and Westen Wilson 1.

Layne Roberts started and pitched 2.1 innings with 1 strikeout and gave up 7 hits and 5 earned runs. John Garrett relieved Roberts and pitched 3.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and gave up 3 hits and 1 earned run. Jace Brantley pitched one-third of an inning and gave 2 hits and 1 earned run.

The Pioneers are 19-11-1 for the season, and they play Huntland on Wednesday night at home. It will be Senior Night for 14 seniors. Warren County begins the district tournament as district champs Friday and will play host to the winner of the Stone Memorial – White County game at 6 p.m.
