Pioneers fall in foul fest

A basketball game was on tap Thursday night at Warren County Middle School, but the Pioneers and visiting Franklin South Gators found themselves in a free-throw contest instead.

In a game where the two teams combined to shoot 58 free throws, the Gators prevailed 43-38.

Ke'Andre Johnson led the Gators with 23 points, including sinking 5-of-11 at the charity stripe. For the game, Franklin South made 13-of-37 at the line, while Warren County connected on 12-of-21.

The nip-and-tuck contest brought a capacity crowd to its feet when Pioneer Asher Wallace sank a 3-pointer late to make it a one-possession game. Warren County had chances to take control, but Johnson was able to get in the lane for a pair of layups before Justin Dedrick sealed the game - fittingly - with two free throws.

Eli Kuykendall powered the early offense for the Pioneers, leading the team with 14 points before fouling out. Wallace and Caden Beaty, fellow starters, also had to watch the final minutes from the bench.

Keldric Cox finished with 10 points for the Pioneers, while Kaden Rutledge added four. Wallace and Beaty chipped in three points apiece, followed by Hudson O'Connor and Chance Hunter with two points each.
