Tournaments have been the Warren County High School baseball team’s bread and butter this season, but the Pioneers struggled Saturday in the Grundy County tournament.
Warren County was shut out by Upperman 6-0, then fell 7-6 to Sequatchie County as the Pioneers finished 1-2 in pool play.
The Pioneers felt the sting of the Upperman Bees for the second time this season. In the fourth matchup between the two teams, Upperman evened the series by blanking Warren County on the scoreboard.
Worse yet, the Pioneers finished with a zero in the hit column as well. Warren County was no-hit for the second time this season, with the first coming in a contest against Tullahoma.
Kyle Rutledge, who won the previous two games against Upperman, took the loss Saturday. Rutledge pitched two innings, giving up four runs on three hits while walking three and striking out one.
Senior Spencer Pryor finished the game on the mound, pitching two innings and allowing two runs on four hits.
The Pioneers broke up the perfect game as Brett Mullican reached on an error and Rutledge drew a walk.
Warren County didn’t take long to break its scoring slump against Sequatchie County, but the Pioneers couldn’t hold on to the lead in the late innings.
After building three-run leads twice against Sequatchie County, the Pioneers lost when an error gave Sequatchie County the winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
Warren County opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, then led again 6-3 entering the bottom of the fourth.
Sequatchie County was able to rally each time, getting six runs off Pioneer starter Derek Brumley.
Brumley left the game in the fourth after allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out three, walking three and hitting two.
Micah McColloch battled out of a fourth-inning jam, but a costly mistake in the fifth meant the senior took the loss. McColloch recorded two outs in the game and gave up one run on one hit.
Logan Underhill and Garrison Holmes finished with two hits apiece to lead the offense. Daulton Foster, Austin Green and Mullican each finished with one hit and two RBIs apiece.
Warren County looked to get back to its winning ways last night when the team played host to Lebanon on senior night. The Pioneers honored 12 seniors who played their last regular-season game at Patrick Ramsey Field. Results were unavailable at press time.
Warren County will begin play in the District 6-AAA tournament this Saturday in Coffee County. The Pioneers and Red Raiders are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
