As we near the start of the 2023 football season, the Southern Standard will be breaking down the Pioneer football roster. These previews, which will run every issue until the season kicks off Friday, Aug. 18 against DeKalb County are sponsored by Security Federal Savings Bank.
Stopping opponents this fall won't be easy for the Pioneers, but if Warren County wants to add more wins in 2023, it'll start with work being done in the trenches.
The Pioneers have been working since the spring to enchance their pass rush and tighten up the run defense on the front line. Defensive line coach Dre Litaker has been a spark, keeping his unit after practice everyday for extra drills. There's hope all the effort put in by the DL can help affect quarterbacks this fall.
The group has some promising players across the line, including sophomore Jr Mares. He was an immediate impact player as a freshman and is honing his skills this fall, hopeful that he can make a huge impact on the interior. He'll be rotating with Xander McCormick, Jase Taylor, Tony Mathis and Briley Myers at defensive tackle this fall.
At end, Warren County is mixing in guys with athleticism and range to set the edge and cover the flats. Aiden Miller and Silas Martin look up to the task, while Hunter Mahler and freshman Garrett Mitchell could also see reps. Braden Herman and JD Vanatta are also in contention for snaps as the Pioneers need depth to win battles in the trenches for four quarters.
Editors note: The Pioneer position previews will continue this Friday with a look at special teams.
