No swim team this year

Gilley Pool will open this year but plans for a swim team have been drained.

McMinnville Swim Team coach Paige Northcutt said Thursday she is sad to announce there will not be a team or swim meets this summer.

“Our league follows the rules of USA Swimming, which has said there are to be no organized swim meets,” said Northcutt, a fitness enthusiast and former Olympic swimmer. “I’ve fielded a lot of calls about the swim team, and I wish we could do something, but we won’t be having one this year.”

There were 108 swimmers who were on the team last year ranging in ages from 3 to 18. Unlike other communities which have indoor pools, Northcutt said the summer months are the only ones available for local children to hone their swim skills in Warren County.

“We had over 100 kids last year and I don’t want them to lose interest,” said Northcutt. “I understand this is a difficult time right now. Hopefully we’ll be able to bounce back next year.”

McMinnville Swim Team travels throughout the region competing against teams from Manchester, Shelbyville, Sewanee, Fayetteville and other cities.

Gilley Pool in McMinnville is typically only open for about three months out of the year.
