New Bybees claims regular-season crown

All Church League season, New Bybees and Madison Street had been battling for the Women’s A division top spot.
It took until the final night of the regular season to decide the winner. New Bybees claimed the regular season title by defeating Madison Street 13-11 Tuesday night at Warren County Fairgrounds.
Kris Sparkman broke a 11-11 tie in the top of the seventh with a two-run double to give New Bybees its ninth win.
Madison Street had a chance to tie in the seventh with two runners on and two outs, but Emily Lopez flied out to left field to end the game.
New Bybees jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through the halfway point of the third inning. Lea Montgomery had RBIs in the first and second innings and Blaire Smith had a two-run single in the third to push the advantage to six.
Madison Street cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when Lopez, Tonya Swann and Kaylee Murray each had RBI singles.
New Bybees bounced back quickly, scoring two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. Montgomery’s third RBI in the fifth put New Bybees in double digits.
Madison Street battled back to tie by scoring four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Swann’s two-run double led the rally in the fifth and Kelly Smartt added a two-run double of her own in the sixth.
With the game entering the seventh tied at 11, Kati Minton led off with a double. Sina Neal followed with single to put two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Montgomery thought she had another RBI hit, but her line drive to third base was snagged for the first out.
Sparkman made sure nobody was going to catch her shot, as she split two outfielders to give New Bybees the lead for good.
Neal finished 5-for-5 as New Bybees ended the regular season 9-1. Minton and Johnson had four hits apiece.
Swann and Hill Mae Helton had four hits each for Madison Street, which finished 8-2. Smartt, Lopez and Murray had three hits apiece.

Pioneer wins two

Pioneer completed the only undefeated regular season in Church League this season by winning two games on the final night of the season.
Pioneer got a two-run, inside-the-park home run from Christian Johnson to defeat Rock Island 17-16 at 6 p.m., then returned at 9 p.m. to defeat Locust Street 15-4.
Johnson’s two-run shot came in the bottom of the seventh after Rock Island had built a 16-12 lead with eight runs in the top of the seventh.
Pioneer never panicked, as Johnson capped off the five-run inning with the home run for the team’s ninth win.
Johnson and Lauren Trail each went 4-for-4 in the first win.
Lecretia Brown, Lori Mason, Delia Walker and Erica Moore had four hits apiece for Rock Island.
Pioneer didn’t let the next game go down to the wire. Pioneer jumped out to a 11-0 lead after two innings against Locust Street and coasted to a win in five innings.
Trail again went 4-for-4, while Autumn Hargis, Misty Neal, Kathy Johnson and Christian Johnson had three hits apiece.
Brittney Fann and Kim Homes had three hits apiece for Locust Street.
The Women’s Church League tournaments will begin on Tuesday night. Locust Street will play First Baptist on the first night in “B”, while the Baptist Misfits will take on Westwood in “A” ball. Both games will begin at 6 p.m.
