In the first game of the night at Newtown ballfield, Mud Bums took on Cleats and Cleavage as both teams were looking to advance to the second round of the co-ed softball tournament.The game was never close as Mud Bums exploded for 26 runs, including a 13-run first inning, on its way to a 26-4 victory, advancing them in the winner’s bracket.Dustin Rhea led Mud Bum’s in the hitting column as he went 4-for-4 with three triples, a double and five RBIs.Brett Simmons picked up the win on the mound as he went three innings and allowed four runs.Mud Bums got its bats going quickly as it used timely hitting in the top of the first to race out to a 13-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.Cleats and Cleavage cut the deficit to 11 in the bottom of the inning, 13-2, as it continued to trail by double digits, after one.Mud Bums continued to lay the hammer down on Cleats and Cleavage as it saw 12 runs come across the plate, including a grand slam over the fence by Jeff Simmons to pad its already comfortable lead as it now led 25-2.Cleats and Cleavage tried to battle back in the bottom of the inning but it continued to leave runners on base, only scoring two runs, 25-4, after two.Mud Bums scored another run in the top of the third to continue to put salt in the wound of Cleats and Cleavage as the game continued to be out of reach, 26-4.The Cleats and Cleavage side went down quickly in the bottom of the inning as Mud Bums ultimately won the game via the run-rule, advancing it to the next round of the tournament.
