Both teams were up to the task Friday night when Centertown played host to the Lady Eagles of Morrison. Stalemated for over four minutes, it would be the Lady Warriors who drew first blood with 1:53 left in the quarter as Madison Johnson hit a bucket inside to end the drought.
It was the Morrison Lady Eagles who won the low-scoring contest however, taking home a 13-11 victory.
“It was the best defensive battle I have seen in a girls game in a long time,” said Morrison coach Kyle Cannon. “I am very proud of our girls effort. The defense and rebounding was great on both sides. Coach Eckenrod always does a great job and is fun to coach against.”
The Lady Eagles (11-5) had a 12-6 halftime lead, but the Lady Warriors (13-4) upped their D for the second half, holding Morrison to only 1 point. Morrison’s defense concentrated on hanging onto a 13-9 lead it held from the third quarter until Lady Warrior Maddison Johnson made a last-minute bucket to end the contest.
Scoring for Morrison were Jessica Alvarez and Marcie Pope with 4 points each, Brienne Kelsey and Jenna Newby scored 2 points apiece and Lakelyn Ross hit for 1 point.
Centertown’s hoop hitters were Madison Johnson with a game-high 6 points, Alyssa Mosley and Addison Johnson with 2 points each and Krista Chisam made 1 point from the charity stripe.
Centertown travels to Warren County Middle School for its last game of the season Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. before the end-of-season tournament at Irving College on Dec. 8. Morrison will play host to Dibrell on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
