A Warren County elementary championship may have eluded Morrison this season, but the Eagles and Lady Eagles still found ways to add more memorabilia to the school's trophy case. Morrison swept the Van Buren Holiday Tournament, which was held over the last two weeks.
The Lady Eagles clinched the title with a 44-21 victory over Coalmont Monday night, while the Eagles soared to a 59-24 beatdown of North Middle School.
The Morrison girls, who finished second in the regular season and tournament of the Warren County elementary league, were never challenged on their way to the title. The Lady Eagles won their three games by 75 points total, including the blowout in the championship game.
Morrison blew the game away in the third quarter, growing a 21-14 lead into a 34-17 double up by the time the fourth quarter began.
Lia Wright, one of four Lady Eagles to earn all-tournament honors, led her team to the big advantage with seven points in the third quarter. Wright hit a 3-pointer, then slashed to the basket for two short shots. It was part of a game-high 15 points for Wright.
Gabby Monzon, another all-tourney honoree, finished with 11 points in the championship game. Fellow all-tournament selections Brienne Kesley and Lexi Whipple scored 8 points each Monday. Marcie Pope had 2 in the win.
The Eagles made it a night of blowouts behind Tyler Dunn's big night. The all-tournament selection scored 18 points, all in the first three quarters before coach Kyle Cannon emptied the bench in the final quarter.
Hunter Musgrove was right behind with 12 points, while Parker Yates and Kaden Desmarais scored 8 points each. Musgrove, Yates and Desmarais joined Dunn on the all-tournament team.
Caylon Driver chipped in 6 points in the championship game, while Lorenzo Hernandez came off the bench to score 4 points in the final quarter. Curtlan George rounded out the scoring with three points.
