Morrison boys too fast for Boyd

Morrison post Luke Saldana drives baseline Monday night against the defense of Boyd big man Weston Wright. Morrison won the first-round matchup in the Morrison Ruritan Tournament.

Teams that want to keep pace with Morrison this year better lace up their sneakers and get ready to run.

Or ride a horse.

The Eagles bring blazing speed to the court and that was on full display Monday night during a 52-9 win over Boyd in the first round of the Morrison Ruritan Tournament.

Kristopher Robledo led Morrison with 17 points, followed by Isaiah Robledo with 14.

Jack Rhoton was the top scorer for Boyd with 6.

Morrison set the pace from the opening tip as Isaiah Robledo grabbed the tip and raced in for a layup to put the Eagles up 2-0 just 3 seconds into the game. That play was indicative of how fast Morrison likes to get up and down the floor.

Rhoton answered with one of the highlights for Boyd when he hit a 3-pointer from downtown to give the Broncos the lead, 3-2.

But the Boyd celebration was short-lived as Morrison scored the next 18 points to take a 20-3 lead after the first quarter. The Eagles scored nearly all their points in transition as Isaiah and Kristopher were able to beat the defense down court for 2-on-1 fastbreaks or uncontested layups.

Morrison’s Braxton Gibbs made a steal as the Broncos were trying to set up their offense and he dribbled the length of the court for a layup. All the Eagle points came from the paint as Isaiah scored 10 and Kristopher scored 8 in the opening quarter.

Braden Haggins added to the well-rounded attack of Morrison as he showed he can step outside and knock down 3-pointers. He hit two on his way to scoring 10 points.

Boyd was determined to play with energy and the Broncos never backed down in this matchup. Rhoton and Weston Wright battled for rebounds under the goal and guard Bryant Ralph was feisty on the perimeter.
