KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Purdue coach Gene Keady says the challenges Cuonzo Martin will face at Tennessee will seem minor in comparison to what the new Volunteers coach has already been through.
Tennessee announced Sunday it had hired Martin after his third season at Missouri State. Martin will be introduced at a press conference on Monday afternoon.
Martin both played and served as an assistant for Keady at Purdue.
Keady, now a special assistant at St. John's, noted Martin's upbringing in a tough East St. Louis, Ill., neighborhood, the multiple surgeries he needed to get his knees in shape to play in college and the Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma he's overcome since college.
The Vols are facing NCAA sanctions after being charged with major recruiting violations.
