Lady Warriors top Morrison

Thursday night’s girls matchup featuring the Morrison Lady Eagles against the evenly matched Centertown Lady Warriors ended with a Centertown triumph, 28-21.

The entire game was extremely close. Both teams came out with speed and intensity, forcing unwanted turnovers on both ends of the floor. Madalyn Stubblefield dropped in four of the Lady Warriors first-quarter points as Madison Hollis and Ricki Valenta each added two.

The lady Eagles kept it close through the first quarter with four points from Cierrah Baker, with Cassie Ross adding two to the first quarter run.

The second quarter seemed to turn in favor of the Eagles in scoring, putting the Lady Warriors on their heels. With made baskets from the unforced turnovers caused by the pursuing defense, the Lady Eagles led the way in the second quarter scoring by Baker who added three more points to her total. Brilee Kelsey scored two and Gabby Monzon added one.

The second seemed to be the quarter the Lady Warriors had their struggles. Unforced turnovers led to lack of points just before the half. Jaden Smartt put in two and that matched with Riki Valentas’ two free throws

Coming out from the break, pace slowed a bit. With neither team finding a way to score. Loose balls where available everywhere with the Lady Warriors finally finding the points behind two points each from Hollis and Valenta.

The Lady Eagles also struggled to find points in the third. Kelsey had the only Lady Eagle point of the quarter.

With one quarter remaining in regulation, both teams came out firing on all cylinders. The team that could pick up loose balls was definitely at an advantage. And the Lady Warriors gained the advantage with four players scoring in the final period. Smartt finished the fourth strong with five points. Valenta added four while Hollis dropped in two more. Stubblefield also added a freethrow.

The Lady Eagles did not have trouble finding ways to score.

The trouble came to try and find ways to stop the Lady Warriors for making it in close. Lakelyn Simpson, Monzon, and Kelsey each made a basket for two of the Lady Eagle point total in the fourth. And two free throws by Ross rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring.
