A decades-long drought came to an end Friday night.
The WCHS Lady Pioneers won a region tournament game, beating a solid Cleveland team in a close battle, 44-41, at Charlie Dalton Gym.
Kyra Perkins scored 15 points and Shelby Smartt added 12 to propel Warren County to victory.
The Lady Pioneers were able to hang on for the win, overcoming a 7-point fourth quarter where they only made one shot from the floor. Cleveland tried to rally at the end, but Warren County prevailed in dramatic fashion.
The win advances Warren County to the region semifinals. The team will play Monday night at 6 p.m. at Coffee County Central High School, which is playing host to the remainder of the region tournament. The Lady Pioneers will face Bradley Central, which is 27-3 overall.
Bradley Central beat Shelbyville 66-37 in its first-round region game and started the season by winning its first 12 games.
