If the Warren County High School girls team wants to have a theme song, the Lady Pioneers should look no further than D.J. Khalid’s “All I Do is Win.”
The Lady Pioneers improved to 3-0 this season with a pair of wins over District 6-AAA opponents last week. Warren County defeated Cumberland County Tuesday by way of forfeit, then returned to action Thursday to beat Cookeville by one stroke in a thrilling match against the Lady Cavaliers.
Coach J.W. Holt had high expectations for his group of Lady Pioneers and thus far his team has lived up to the hype.
“We were pretty excited about the girls coming in and expectations were high because of what we had returning and what Brittany and Katelyn were capable of doing,” said Holt.
“District 6-AAA will be a good battle. We’ve shown we can play with everybody. Our next challenge will be playing White County Thursday.”
The Lady Pioneers had a win assured when the team traveled to Cumberland County Tuesday. With the Lady Jets having only one player, a forfeit win followed.
Warren County still took the course, with Brittany Myers leading the way with an 84. Freshman Saylem Powell followed by shooting 87, while senior Katelyn Davenport and freshman Brynn Craven shot 105 and 108 respectively.
Thursday’s win was no easy victory though. Warren County had to sweat until after the final hole was played and the score was revealed.
With Myers firing 77 and Powell finishing two strokes behind, Warren County’s team score of 156 was one better than Cookeville’s 157. Davenport’s 88 and Craven’s round of 90 didn’t qualify for the Lady Pioneers.
Powell stepping up at Cookeville gives coach Holt added confidence his team can compete this season.
“Being a freshman, Saylem needed to get her feet wet and get acclimated with high school golf,” said Holt. “I think that happened at Cookeville and we got the round we were looking for from her.”
While the Lady Pioneers are undefeated, the Pioneers are still in search of their first win.
Warren County lost 318-334 Tuesday to Cumberland County, then fell 290-328 at Cookeville.
Sophomore Nicholas Powell was the low scorer in both rounds for the Pioneers.
Powell shot 78 in Crossville and 74 in Cookeville.
Rounding out the team score in Crossville was Clayton Myers with 80, Nick Stern at 85 and Brock Watson with 91. Crossville was led by Logan Stewart’s 75.
In Cookeville, Tucker Lynn shot 80, Watson fired 84 and Myers finished with a 90. Sean Conally shot 69 to pace the Cavaliers.
Coach Holt believes his boys team still needs to find the right mix of players to be successful.
“We’re trying to find consistency and the right five guys to group together,” said Holt. “We’ve gotten to take a few extra players to play individually, so we’re getting more kids on the course.
“We’re still waiting on the match where all five guys are firing at all cylinders.”
Warren County will travel to Murfreesboro Tuesday to play in the Murfreesboro Invitation-al at Champions Run golf course. Action will begin at 9 p.m.
The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers dive back into District 6-AAA play with a match against White County Thursday at River Watch golf course. Play will start at 1 p.m.
