Lady Pioneers have trouble waking up against Coffee

Sadie Simmons pitches for the Lady Pioneers on Thursday as they took on Coffee County at home. Simmons successfully pitched her way out of a bases-loaded situation.

After their first jolt with Coffee County in Thursday’s opening game, the Warren County Middle School varsity Lady Pioneers had a little trouble getting going, falling 9-2.
In the JV game played afterwards, the Lady Pioneers perked up and won the contest, 4-3, at home.
“We left eight runners on base, six in scoring position. We had every opportunity to take the lead in every inning, and we did not capitalize,” said Warren County coach Marc Pyburn. “They had timely hitting, and we didn’t. We will see them again, and I expect us to step up and take what’s ours.”
In the varsity game, things could have been worse for Warren County (2-2) as Coffee County threatened early with the bases loaded twice. Pitching saved the score from becoming overly one-sided as Sadie Simmons pitched the Lady Pioneers out of trouble on several Coffee County rallies leaving it 2-1 after four.
The Lady Pioneers big bats were working better in the second game as Mia Starkey got an early single. Halo Armstrong drove her home and Cadi Beth Todd drove in Armstrong with a big-hit double, 2-1, after the bottom of the first.
Getting runs from Jessie Young in the second and Aleya Esparza in the third kept the Lady Pioneers JV (4-0) ahead by 1 run after a shortened doubleheader as they hung on to the 4-3 victory.
After going on the road this weekend and again Monday, the WCMS Lady Pioneers play host to Franklin South on Tuesday, March 14. Game time is 5 p.m.
