A five-game winning streak for the Lady Pioneers in a bitter border battle came to a crashing halt Friday night. DeKalb County shot the lights out at home to defeat visiting Warren County 70-59.
The Tigerettes sank 11 triples in the first half and ran out to a 25-point advantage at one point over Warren County, which had beaten DeKalb County 70-28 in their final meeting last season. Warren County got some inspired play late by some youngsters to cut the deficit, but it was too much to overcome as DeKalb County was able to top the Lady Pioneers for the first time since 2020.
Warren County (1-6) ultimately finished with as many 3-pointers made (12) as the Tigerettes, but the offense couldn't keep pace with DeKalb County throughout the night. The Tigerettes had 53 points at halftime, topping their total output from their three previous games.
Brinlee Griffith did her best to keep Warren County close in the first half, hitting three triples on her way to a season-best 15 points. Senior Miranda Medley took over the offense in the third, connecting on four of her five triples in the quarter as she also netted 15 points for the Lady Pioneers.
The only time the deficit really started to dwindle though was when both teams went deep into their benches late. Freshman Chloe Wanamaker sparked the Lady Pioneers with her speed and energy, getting four late points and a pair of assists. Senior Hailey Simpson also got a late bucket off a strong finish in the paint, while Valery Esparza sank a pair of free throws to get on the board.
Griffith also got into the late action, nailing two more 3-pointers to add to her best shooting night of the season.
Battling foul trouble most of the night, Bri Taylor finished with seven points, all coming in the first half.
DeKalb County was led by sisters Chloe Van Vranken (23 points) and Ella Van Vranken (18 points).
Warren County returns to action this week with a matchup in Sparta Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
