The WCHS Lady Pioneer soccer team has notched another signature win, beating Oakland on the road Thursday night, 2-1.
Katie Toney and Bekah Jackson scored one goal each in the impressive victory. The Lady Pioneers improve to 6-1 and face their next opponent, Coffee County, at home on Thursday.
Expectations are building as the Lady Pioneers rack up wins.
WCHS coach Todd Willmore had many positive comments about his team after the win. The Lady Pioneers have now beaten Oakland and Riverdale this season.
Willmore said, “Oakland was a strong possession team and spread the field well when on attack. However, our girls were able to keep good pressure on the ball and cover any runs Oakland made off the ball. The back four of Shelby Roberts, Natalie Stepien, Bailey Bundy, and Savannah Winfree played very well. Samantha McCormick continues to improve in goal and had a number of impressive saves.”
The Lady Pioneers got on the scoreboard first. Coach Willmore described the first score in detail.
“We were fortunate to get on the board first at the 34-minute mark with a long throw-in into Oakland’s box by Savannah Winfree to Bekah Jackson,” said Willmore. “Bekah settled the ball flawlessly and hit a perfect shot into the back of the net.”
Oakland fought back and tied the score 1-1.
Katie Toney scored the winning goal with eight minutes to go. Coach Willmore said the team played great defense during the last five minutes to preserve the win. Willmore said, “The last five minutes of the match, the girls played their best soccer of the night. We kept constant pressure on them both offensively and defensively. This was a quality win against a very skilled team.”
