Lady Pioneers crush Cookeville

Maybe it was his years of being a math teacher, or a speech he heard during his nearly 30 years of coaching, but coach David Dunlap reached deep into his bag of tricks to motivate the Warren County High School girls tennis team Tuesday before its match with Cookeville.Dunlap told the story of California math teacher Jaime Escalante, who was made famous for being the inspiration of the movie “Stand and Deliver.” Dunlap, like Escalante, urged his group to have “ganas” - or passion. The Lady Pioneers definitely had the ganas Tuesday. For the first time under coach Dunlap, and perhaps the first time in school history, Warren County swept the Lady Cavaliers 9-0 to earn its first District 6-AAA victory of the season. The Lady Pioneers, who improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the district, took their coach’s message to heart while avenging a District 6-AAA tournament title game loss to the Lady Cavaliers last year. From the moment his top doubles team walked off after a win, coach Dunlap knew his Lady Pioneers meant business.“I had one girl come up and ask me, ‘What was that word you used?’ and when I told her ganas, she said I definitely got it,” said Dunlap.
