Lady Pioneers bounce back

Webb and White County picked the wrong time to appear on the Warren County High School girls soccer team’s schedule.
After suffering their first loss of the season last week against Cookeville, the Lady Pioneers took  out their frustrations on the Lady Feet and Warriorettes. Warren County downed Webb 8-0 Saturday, then followed it up with a 6-1 victory over White County Monday.
Warren County (5-1) was reeling from a 6-1 loss to Cookeville last week when the team traveled to Webb Saturday. With senior Morgan McCormick leading the way, the Lady Pioneers got back to their winning ways.
McCormick, the prolific scorer who was named all state last year and District 6-AAA MVP as a sophomore, set a new career high with four goals against the Lady Feet. Senior Ansley Mullican added three goals while freshman Madison Mason scored her first career varsity goal against Webb.
Mullican notched her third hat trick - and second in two matches - with three more goals against White County Monday. McCormick added two goals and one assist in the second district victory of the season. Warren County beat Stone Memorial 6-2 on the road Sept. 5.
The three goals against White County gave Mullican 70 in her career while McCormick is right behind with 69 career goals.
Mason capped the scoring against the Warriorettes on a goal where fellow freshman Natalie Reed  earned the assist.
While the win over White County improved the Lady Pioneers to 2-1 in district, there were some setbacks against the Warriorettes in the form of injuries.
The defense took a hit when Courtney Blair sprained her wrist on a fall, an injury that will sideline the starter for two weeks. McCormick also was injured as the senior star pulled her hamstring. McCormick was able to return to action for Thursday’s game against Ooltewah, a match that wasn’t completed by press time.
Coach Todd Willmore doesn’t want to see any of his players get injured, especially two starters, but has been working on the team’s depth just in case.
“We’ve been playing approximately 15-20 girls in the last couple of matches,” said Willmore. “It was in hopes of improving our depth in case of injuries such as those to Courtney and Morgan.”
The Lady Pioneers will have the weekend off to rest before returning to action Tuesday in Crossville. Warren County is scheduled to play Cumberland County at 6 p.m.
