Bree Smith spent most of her life hoisting jumpshots in an empty gym, running extra miles to stay in shape and doing whatever it took to improve her game in hopes of playing college basketball. The work paid off.
Smith, a four-year star at Warren County High School, signed Monday with Tennessee Temple University to continue her basketball career at the Chattanooga college.
Smith signed at WCHS auditorium in front of friends, family and teammates to become the latest Lady Crusader under fourth-year head coach Kenrick Liburd, who was also on hand to see Smith sign.
It was a dream come true for Smith, who will immediately compete for playing time at the point-guard position for Tennessee Temple. Smith is ready for a new challenge after helping the Lady Pioneers pile up 31 wins the past two seasons.
“I’m ready for a new beginning,” said Smith. “I’m excited, but also a little nervous. It’s going to be fun.”
Liburd spoke about first seeing Smith at a showcase event at Chattanooga Red Bank High School. Among nearly 200 players at the event, Smith’s ability to play point guard stood out.
Upon meeting Smith, Liburd noticed it was Smith’s attitude and leadership that made her a perfect fit for Tennessee Temple.
“Bree leads by example,” said Liburd. “When you’re a point guard and have the ball in your hands at all times, the pressure can mount. Bree plays with an even keel. It’s the type of demeanor we’re looking for and Bree will be a big addition to our campus on and off the court.”
The same showcase event helped Smith decide Tennessee Temple was the place to be. When the decision needed to be made between Tennessee Temple and Martin Methodist, Smith remembered her showcase coach was from Temple and the kinship from that hot day at Red Bank stuck out.
“I really like the campus and the people who I’ve met,” said Smith. “My coach at the showcase will be a senior next season and I can’t wait to play with her.”
Smith joins the Lady Crusaders after having a strong senior season with the Lady Pioneers.
Smith averaged over 12 points and six assists her senior year and narrowly missed joining the 1,000-point club for her career.
Smith played her best when the stakes were the highest. Smith’s highest-scoring game came when she dropped 18 points against Cookeville in the District 6-AAA play-in game to help Warren County win by 10 and qualify for regionals.
Smith will see the competition improve next season as Tennessee Temple plays its regular-season games in NAIA and postseason games in the National Christian College Association. The Lady Crusader schedule also features games against Division 1 and 2 teams.
Smith will enroll at Tennessee Temple in the fall.
