Being a powerhouse in District 6AAA for the last three years has made opposing coaches take notice of the Lady Pioneers.
Six WCHS softball players were selected to the all-district team Friday, which was voted on by the district coaches. Senior shortstop Emily Mikkola headlined the honors, earning the District 6AAA infielder of the year award along with being on the first team.
“Being picked gives me a boost,” said Mikkola. “Offensively, this year has been a struggle for me and it feels good to know I can rely on another part of the game. I appreciate being selected.”
Seniors Ashton Whiles and Hailey Wood joined Mikkola on the first team, as did freshman Madison Hollis. Sophomores Rhealee Johnson and Elia Atterson were second-team selections.
Mikkola, Whiles and Wood have been racking up awards for three years. During those seasons, Warren County has never finished lower than second in the standings, won a regular season title, a tournament title and qualified for region all three years.
“Ashton, Emily and Hailey have improved every year in the program and have made their mark on the district,” said coach Gooby Martin. “The other coaches are ready for them to graduate.”
Warren County won’t be a pushover in their absence, thanks to the quick ascension of Hollis, a reliable bat and top pitcher, and the rapid development of Johnson and Atterson.
“Madison had an outstanding year pitching and hitting. If she gets better every year, she has a real bright future,” said Martin. “Rhealee and Elia had solid sophomore seasons. I expect them to get better and be standouts for us the next two years.”
The six Lady Pioneers will get a chance to lift the program to new heights Monday. Warren County plays in the region semifinals against Walker Valley at 6 p.m.
