The Covenant Academy Lady Lions capped a win-filled high school basketball season with a second-place finish last week in the TNCAA Tournament.

“We only lost to two teams this year and we came back in the tournament beating one of those by 12 points,” said coach Lacey Slatton.

With Slatton joining the team as a first-year coach, she admitted there was much “new” to overcome at the start of the year.

“They had a new coach with new ideas and I had a new role to lead a new group of girls to be the best we could be on and off the court,” said Slatton. “The girls really stepped up and played well as a team and perfected their defense. They learned positivity gets you a lot further in life than negativity. They learned to battle through tough physical and mental games and rose above all of it. To say I am proud of these fine young ladies is an understatement.”

Slatton said the team will miss its three graduating seniors, but she’s already getting excited about next year and the strong core of players expected to return.
